Crime Shows - Fine Tuning the Criminal Mind?

By admin On December 27, 2008 No Comments
crime
There are numerous crime shows filling the prime time slots. And you can find some version of Law and Order, CSI etc. on at any time of day on a number of channels. The writers are increasingly creative and have a tireless supply of inspiration from real life events that they can put various spins on. The actors are dedicated and the directors are creating stories that are engaging and elicit emotional responses.

I know that personally they are my favorite thing to tune in to when I watch television. I watch a complicated crime unfold and the story develop around it until the criminals minimal error is exposed and the perp is collared! Usually this error is exposed by using a combination of a mastermind underpaid detective and the limitless resources of forensic science. I have often feared that this information may be misinterpreted by some as instruction. The program lays out how to commit the crime, what errors to avoid and if arrested how to see your trial through to acquittal.

The truth of the matter is that the numerous crime shows and frequency with which they air are in fact having an effect on real-world expectations. This effect has earned its own buzz phrase named the “CSI Effect” which is also referred to as the “CSI Syndrome”. This effect is described as the viewing of crime shows raising victims and jury members expectation of forensic science. The television writers can overstate the accuracy of forensic techniques as well as exaggerate the ability of forensic science. The expectations of crime scene investigation and DNA testing are especially affected. Prosecutors are being pressured to present more forensic evidence in court. Potential jurors are sometimes asked if they are viewers of Forensic Crime shows as this trend is being considered.

In a similar vein, there are findings that suggest that forensic science shows help criminals cover their tracks. According to Joshua Marquis, an Oregon prosecutor, “It’s not uncommon for criminals to now bring bleach with them to sanitize the crime scene.” Criminals are learning what not to leave behind at crime scenes and getting much better at covering their tracks. Crime show effects on criminals can also be looked at on a flip side which is much more positive. It is likely that the message being conveyed to many is that no matter how they try to cover their crime, forensic science will reveal their identity.

Whether we look at the positive or negative effects on the criminal, victim or juror, the cultivation theory is supported by any one of the findings. The cultivation theory holds that television cultivates a distorted world view in which one’s perception of social reality resembles the reality portrayed in the television program. When looking at crime shows, the cultivation theory would say that the impact on an individual would be the tendency to overestimate the rate of violent crime or the prevalence of law enforcement officials.

We are exposed to a plethora of crime shows. The writers are increasingly creative and have a tireless supply of inspiration from real life events. And it seems that life events are being equally affected by the shows themselves! The emotional responses that these shows tend to elicit are carried over into our views, opinions and expectations of real life scenarios.

Cyber Criminals, Cyber Crime and You

By admin On December 26, 2008 No Comments

Ed Opperman asked:

(c) 2008 Ed Opperman

With more people using the internet, and the availability of the internet on every street corner, there has been a drastic increase in cyber crime. These can be committed against large companies, and individuals. It is easy for large companies and large wallets to stop cyber crime, but what about those on limited budgets? What is the solution for those who have fallen victim to cyber crimes?

First it is important to understand what cyber crime is. Cyber crime is a crime committed online via emails, or chatrooms or any other form of interaction that can take place online. It does not vary much from the same criminal misconducts committed in real life. The only difference is the fact that it is much harder to pursue these types of criminals, because they transcend the typical borders associated with countries and the jurisdictions of various law enforcement agencies may clash as a result.

Cybercrime can take the form of cyber stalking, where they follow you around into various chat rooms and harass you online. This can also be things like a hacker taking control of your computer or someone stealing your identity online. Everything can be destroyed by cyber criminals. They can wipe entire hard drives, steal your entire life and everything about it and essentially just mess with your entire world.

How can you protect yourself from becoming a victim of cyber crime?

To prevent criminals from reaching your personal computer it is important to have a good antivirus protection program in place as well as a firewall. Ensure you use spyware programs and of course that you keep up on all the security updates for these programs as well.

Protect your personal information. Although many now have pictures and their entire lives posted on blogs and other sites, they are playing in dangerous waters. Criminals can locate everything about you from something as simple as your email address. So, simply put, minimize the information you provide online. Don’t give out vital information like your Social Security Number or anything else unless you trust the source and their use for that information.

When shopping online, always ensure that you are using secure sites for your e-commerce transactions and payments.

Password protect everything, and do not use the obvious birth date or mailing address or any other simple to guess password. Pick up instead a program like roboform that will generate randomized letter and number combinations that are not associated with anything in your life.

When all is said and done if you really want to protect yourself from cyber criminals and cyber crime, you can always purchase a detailed report on how safe you are online. This report is called a risk assessment report and can give you a greater insight into how and where you are risking yourself online and how you can fix the problem. The prevention of identity theft and other cyber crimes begins with you. Knowing how to protect yourself and minimize your risk is essentially all you can do to limit the chances you are taking with your life.

The cell phone camera to Digitahi of 3G is reshaping the way people interactive. While becoming increasingly popular, particularly among adolescents and more high-tech video and bandwidth compression are introduced, vederemo a whole new realm of communication. As more people communicate on cell phones with video and images could very well see a decrease in crime. I realize that criminals can be attached to your phone if you try any criminal activities because of the prevalence of these camera phones. The eyes and ears of the company is expanding in scope and with that we can probably see that random acts of theft, violence and other crimes decreased. Of course there will always be the smart criminal who tries to calculate in advance outside a specific program to evade detection, but the common criminal element that we see more and more generally will be attached to the camera and will be brought to justice. As more and more criminals are sentenced in this way serve as a deterrent factor to consider others as the very real possibility that can be attached to the camera. This will finally help to restore order and improve the statistics of crime. The mobile phones which incorporate digital cameras are sold much more often of digital cameras themselves. Are You Contributing to Crime by Reading the Newspapers?

By admin On December 22, 2008 No Comments
crime
Elsabe Smit asked:

Yes, I am making the shocking allegation that you are aiding and abetting crime by simply reading the newspaper, but hear me out.

Let me give the background first. There have been at least eighteen victims of knife crime in London over the period of eight months since January 2008. Newspaper reports indicate that the number of people charged with knife crimes have fallen by 50%, and at the same time the number of teenage murders involving knifes have risen dramatically.

A teenager that lives in one of the most dangerous areas in London was quoted as saying “How are the police or the government going to be able to sort this out if we as kids don’t know why this sort of stuff’s going on?” This child is very wise.

The response of the local government is a website called London Against Gun and Knife Crime. Obviously the creators of the website have never heard of the Law of Attraction.

How does this Law of Attraction work? I will give you my understanding of how it works. We think thoughts and these thoughts create waves all around us. The waves resonate with similar waves and then we attract the similar waves to us. The whole process snowball until our thoughts materialise.

Let me give you an example. You read the newspaper. There are articles about crime and bad news and negativity all over the pages. You do not think about this and step back and say “I want love in my life”. You read it all and think “I hope I don’t ever get mugged.”

Imagine a massive ear listening to your thoughts - an unbiased ear. The ear will not hear the word “don’t” because the ear is unbiased and does not judge - we add the judgement. The ear hears “hope” and “mugged”.

Over the next weeks and months you continue to read the newspapers every day, and for some reason all the articles about muggings and violent crimes catch your eye. Every time you read such an article, you think a similar thought, for example “More muggings - I wonder who is next.” The massive ear hears “muggings” and “next”. Or you think “one of these days someone close to me will get mugged” and the massive ear hears “someone” and “me” and “mugged”.

Then the cousin of the sister of the brother-in-law of a friend’s friend gets mugged and you hear about it. Somehow it confirms the thoughts you have had about mugging and you say “I told you so”. The next “logical” thought in your mind is “one of these days I will get mugged”. The massive ear still does not judge - like a robot that is there to simply obey commands and to act. The ear hears “I” and “get mugged”. And the ear puts you in touch with similar waves around you and your own wave of fear and trepidation and anticipation gets stronger - you just “know” it will happen to you one day.

Because your thoughts are so full of avoiding being mugged, that is all you think about. You see potential muggers around every corner and cling to your purse or keep ensuring that everything is still in your pocket. And potential muggers pick up on the waves of fear that emanate from you and get closer to you, because you reflect their reality as well.

And then one day you get mugged.

Do you then say “Oops, time to change my thought processes. Time to raise my thought vibrations and think about unconditional love and peace and things that make me feel good”?

Or do you join the growing chorus of negativity around you and tell everyone in sight of the terrible experience you had, and add momentum to the waves of fear and anxiety around you? And do you, by telling your story and reading more newspapers and watching more TV news to validate your experience, perpetuate the crime around you?

You tell me.

Mother Teresa understood the Law of Attraction. Here is a quote from her: “I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”

Mother Teresa intuitively understood that what you fill your mind with is what you attract to you. And where you have a particular expectation, eventually it will get fulfilled.

How about this explanation for the Law of Attraction: You walk into a restaurant with a friend, order food from the menu, and continue with your conversation. You expect that your order will be delivered, and guess what, it happens. And if the order was delivered promptly by a friendly waiter and the food was delicious, you leave a tip to show your gratitude.

Then you walk out of the restaurant, forget all about the Law of Attraction, and get home safely despite having your mind full of thoughts of muggings and what else, and you forget to say “thank You for bringing me home safely.”

So we manage to get the less important things, like ordering a meal and paying a tip, right, but then we mess up on the big things, like filling our minds with love and peace and gratitude. Let’s try again and let’s this time ensure the massive ear hears only what we want it to hear. And when the massive ear delivers on what we wanted, let’s remember to feel and show gratitude.

When We Commit a Crime

Dalip Singh Wasan asked:

When you make a crimeIt must be accepted that this man can not keep himself and there are likely to commit crimes and it is also possible that you can conceal that fact from others. This could be concealing can be easy or difficult, but in both cases, we return in tension, pressure on and we efforts. We do not know when that secret and we will be open before the public and when the police feel, we will be after us arrested, tortured for highlighting the truth and to gather all the evidence against us in a way that could succeed in 'establishment of this against us. And we sent to prison for a certain period and if the crime is a serious as the murder could be sentenced to death. It is a tragedy with the whole world's people who are not pure and simple. All of us has committed so many crimes, many sins and so many bad behavior and it is also a recognized fact that we are not noting all those facts of life. The man is so clever and intelligent that when committing a crime, a sin or a bad conduct, he begins to organize all the methods with which he can hide those facts from other, and in most cases is concealing the same. It is counting among the lords of the area. People who could not conceal those crimes, sins and bad is conducted before the public before the authorities, before the company and before that the condition and then is facing a sorry figure all around and if they interfered, is proven by courts and sentenced to a jail penalty. So all of us are under tension, efforts and pressures because none of us is clean. The man on earth has learned to live with the pressure, tension and efforts, and that's the reason that he is not enjoying this life. His face is telling us the story and the man is sad and frustrated. This life is not a place for enjoyment because man is not free. So it is only a remedy with us that we should lower down the number of crimes, sins and bad conduct in our action and we must be prepared to do the best facilities so that we could consider easy and free by the efforts and tensions. This is the only solution to our problems.
